A large increase in the federal tax on cigarettes in force on April 1 can motivate 1 million U.S. to stop smoking, according to experts in public health.
The expansion of a popular program of public health insurance for low-income children is being financed by an increase in the federal tax on a package of cigarettes of $ 1.01 per pack, until the current 39 cents in a package of $4.35.
Smoking kills approximately 440.000 Americans each year and costing the country $ 193 billion in medical expenses and loss of productivity, said Dr. Terry Pechacek of the centers for the Control and Prevention of Diseases of the Office on Smoking and Health.
“There are almost unanimous agreement on all the scientific community and the politicians, respect of the increase in the price of cigarettes, as it has an effect consisting of the reduction of the smoking rates, the increase in the dropout rate among adult smokers and prevention before the initiation to the tobacco by children and young adults” said Pechacek.
